Password Manager: Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

This article describes how to use the 2fa function built into the MirageID password manager. The MirageID Password Manager includes support for sharing 2fa (Two Factor Authentication) codes. This is useful when a website that you store the password for in the Password Manager, also requires a 2FA code to sign in. Note that we only support 2FA codes for use with an "Authenticator App" (sometimes referred to as "Google Authenticator"). We do not currently support phone-based 2FA code sharing inside our Password Manager. Everyone is familiar with phone-based 2FA - the process used by banks and many websites to verify their customers Identity and reduce fraud. In phone-based 2FA, you supply the bank or website with your phone number, which they verify. Then, when you want to log in to their website, they send a unique 6-digit value to that verified phone number to ensure that it's actually you logging in. This gives the bank a second "factor" of authentication to ensuring that the person logging in is actually their customer. Not only does that person know the correct password, but that person also has control of a device (the phone), that is known to belong to their customer. However, there are several other ways that websites support to provide a second "factor" of authentication. One other way is by using an "Authenticator App" (sometimes referred to as the "Google Authenticator App"). When you set up an Authenticator App for a website, that website gives you a secret key - a unique code that it shares only with you. The Authenticator App uses this key to create new codes that only work for a short time.Whenever you log in, the website asks for this code to confirm that it’s really you. Since only you and the website know the secret key, the code from your phone proves you’re the one trying to log in, thereby providing a second "factor" of authentication. MirageID has an "Authenticator App" built into our Password Manager, that allows you to share 2FA codes with the users of that Identity. In order to use our Password Manager to share 2FA codes, you will first need to add the secret key provided by the website into the Password Manager:First create an entry for the website in the password manager by adding a password for the website. This will create an entry in our password manager.Once the entry has been created, click on the down arrow on the right side of the entry to expand the options:Click on the "Setup 2FA" button: Paste in the 2fa key that you received from the website.Click "Save"You will see the the 2FA Code for that website. You will typically need to paste this code into the website in order to complete 2FA setup. To use a 2FA code provided by the Password Manager, click on the icon in the Password Manager entry. This will copy the 2FA code to your clipboard for you to paste into the 2FA code form on the website you are logging into. Each website has a different procedure for setting up 2FA and getting the secret key. We provide some examples for popular websites below: SellercentralMore Coming Soon
